Stay with the Hollies is the first album by The Hollies. The album was released in the United Kingdom by the Parlophone label, owned by EMI, in January 1964. In Canada an album with the same title was released on the Capitol 6000 label, also owned by EMI, with a completely different track listing from this LP and the US LP, Here I Go Again on Imperial (see below).

Background

After the success of Liverpool-based group, The Beatles, many artists and repertoire men from London-based record labels went to other English towns in search of other beat group's. One such beat group to be signed to a label was The Hollies from Manchester, who were signed to Parlophone, which was also The Beatles label.[1]

By the end of 1963, The Hollies had made enough recordings for their record label to release an LP record by the group.

Recording, production and songs

After the group was signed to Parlophone, the group made their studio recordings at EMI Studios, located on Abbey Road in London – which later had its name changed to Abbey Road Studios. The group was produced by Ron Richards, who produced other Abbey Road artists – such as Gerry & the Pacemakers – and later started Associated Independent Recording with George Martin and John Burgess.

Many of the songs on the LP were from American writers and performers including Chuck Berry, a favorite among beat groups. The only original composition on the original album was "Little Lover" written by Allan Clarke and Graham Nash, the American release only had the Bobby Elliott/Tony Hicks composition "Keep Off That Friend of Mine", while the Canadian version included "Little Lover" and the Graham Nash composition "Hey What's Wrong with Me". The songs performed by the Hollies are known for the vocal harmonys between Allan Clarke, Tony Hicks, and Graham Nash.

US version vs. UK version

In June 1964, Imperial Records released the first Hollies LP in the USA as Here I Go Again after the moderate success of that single there. Imperial removed the UK LP tracks "Baby Don't Cry" "Mr. Moonlight", "Little Lover", "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" and "Candy Man" and added the singles "Just One Look" and "Here I Go Again" with the b-side "Keep Off That Friend Of Mine" (the first time this song appeared on a LP) to create a unique 12 song album. In 2010, the mono version of this LP was reissued on 180 gram vinyl in the USA by Sundazed Records.

In 1966 "Candy Man", "Little Lover" (mistitled on some covers as "Little Love") and "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" were released two years later on the Imperial album "Bus Stop". This LP was a hodgepodge of old b-sides, LP tracks and songs never released in the USA before to capitalize on the hit single. The Hollies were not happy with this collection, and it was one of the reasons sited by the group on their decision to leave Imperial to sign with Epic Records in 1967 for distribution of their music in the USA.
